Problem statement
The publishing industry of books is under an ongoing pressure to remain relevant in a society that has become fast paced and digital.

Insight
Reading books helps develop concentration and expands one’s mind. Today, society focuses on everything that is digital.

Challenge
Develop a series of four to six illustrations that will entice children to read. The aim is to create an illustrated campaign that uses your drawings to encourage parents and children to explore the wonderful world of reading.

Concept
A book is a symbol of the foundation of growth and educating oneself. The design approach we have chosen incorporates child friendly illustrations, showing this book which shows the foundations of growth with the smaller illustrations emerging out of the book, symbolizing this growth pattern. The illustrated children reading the books show our diverse nation, the illustrated posters all embrace our rainbow nation. The characters emerging from the book are all from children’s stories of all cultures, this helps relate to the target audience by giving a nostalgic feeling for the parents.

Solution
This challenge will be solved by using an integrated campaign, focusing on print media. The type of print media focused on, is posters. The campaign consists of simple, colourful designs, yet still retaining elements of the stories that consumers have come to love and remember. The idea of these stories aims to create a sense of nostalgia to the children and their parents, and hence creating a desire in the target audience to experience their memories of stories and reading again.

We were to examine and debate current and past trends in illustration for print and online and were then tasked to produce a self-directed project in illustration. The task was to develop and apply a unique style that demonstrates a strong grasp of illustration and its communicative value.
